Lions Convention Host Committee

Lions Clubs International

92nd Convention

July 6-10, 2009 - Minneapolis, Minnesota

Host Committee Chair
PDG Jack Hines

I would like to express a very heart filled thanks to all the people that made this Lions International Convention a total success. I want to start with the Host Committee. For the Lions that stepped forward to chair all the jobs that were the responsibility of the Host Committee. They all gave their time to go to meetings for three years and report the progress of their job. I don’t know that I have ever worked with a better group of people to plan a function like the International Convention.

I also want to thank all the partners who helped make the convention a total success: Meet Minneapolis; City of Minneapolis; Metro Connection; Minneapolis Convention Center; and the staff at LCI. All of these groups worked together in full cooperation. When you put all these talented people together great things can and did happen.

I would like to thank the Lions of MD5M for entrusting the committee with this responsibility, and for all the volunteers that worked so hard at the convention.

The week before the convention we had volunteers at the airport to meet the Lions International Officers, Past International Presidents, and the International Directors. The committee helped with the luggage, and transported them to their hotel. The DGE’S came in the week before the convention for their final training. We also had volunteers at the Mall of America one day to help the spouses of the ID’s with their shopping. On Monday, the first day of the convention we had a Meet & Greet. I thought it was a good idea, but it was not advertised enough.

Tuesday was the parade with 9,000 marchers, bands, floats, and cars. The Beach Boys performed in front of 8,000 to 9,000 Lions in attendance that night. All had a great time.

Wednesday, Colin Powell gave an enthusiastic message about the importance of volunteerism and the great work we Lions do. Watch for the text of his message in an upcoming MD Newsletter. It will inspire you. The Twins game had over 2,000 Lions attending, and the Twin donated $6,300 to LCIF. Our eyeglass collection trailer reached our goal of collecting 225,000 pair of glasses. Overall the convention went very well.

Once again I would like to thank all the Lions who helped with this convention and all the partners who helped make this a total success.

Sincerely Yours In Lionism,

PDG Jack Hines
2009 Host Committee Chair
